Growing up, literally, in the newspaper business, Randy held just about every job you could imagine at a local paper. In high school, he had to melt down Linotype slugs, pouring hot lead with a wood-handled scoop. Tiny droplets of the molten metal would hit the concrete floor and splash on his legs, raising blisters. So, you’ve got a tough deadline? No problem. Randy brings a surprising amount of technical know-how to bear on his writing projects for FlightSafety International and our other aviation clients. He is just a few hours short of a master’s degree in space studies from the University of North Dakota. Whether attending daylong conferences on helicopter safety issues, interviewing aviation experts on topics as diverse as human factors and compliance practices or conveying the finer points of advanced simulator design, Randy’s our go-to guy. Born into a South Dakota newspaper family, Randy’s parents owned and operated a succession of local newspapers. While his youth was spent in the “back shop” of the newspaper business – running presses or operating the Linotype – he has spent most of his adult life on the “front page,” working as a reporter and editor for many (if not all) of the Dakotas’ major dailies, including the Bismarck Tribune (as city editor), the Grand Forks Herald and Fargo Forum. With a political science degree from the University of North Dakota, Randy’s main beat understandably was politics and government, but he also spent a fair amount of time as a newsroom supervisor, directing reporters and making news decisions for the next day’s paper. In 2001, he was recruited by The Wichita Eagle. He began his duties as night city editor at Kansas’ largest daily – five days before 9/11. Today, Greteman Group clients benefit from Randy’s wide-ranging experience and knowledge base. With a reporter’s instincts and an editor’s insights, Randy creates compelling, vibrant copy that always tells an interesting story. Whatever the task – interviewing a chief pilot, sifting through performance specs of the latest business jet – Randy’s seasoned eye leads him to the heart of the matter and the essence of a client’s brand. Randy’s as eclectic and meticulous in his leisure interests as in his professional skills. He’s a photographer, with a fondness for black and white landscapes. He’s a guitar player who has restored a vintage Kalamazoo amplifier. He’s built a couple of canoes and a mandolin. And he’s a masochist, currently overhauling a Triumph Spitfire. |
