Garrett Fresh
“A great concept is one that makes an emotional and intellectual connection with the audience,” he says. “The heart and the mind.”

Wise words from an old hand. Well, Garrett is too young to be an old hand, but he’s been an important part of the Greteman team for quite awhile now. He started with us in 1996 as a green intern while finishing his degree in graphic design from Wichita State University. His talent was obvious from the beginning. When he graduated in 1998, we weren’t about to let him go. He’s been achieving the ideal fusion of concept and visual impact ever since on everything from posters to environmental graphics, from presentation packages to full branding solutions.

One high point (there have been many): The first time he saw his work reproduced in Graphis, a publication he has long admired. Another high: Working his way up from lowly intern to art director.

As an art director, Garrett sees projects through from initial idea to the final press check. That can create a lot of pressure – coordinating a team of co-workers, ensuring that every detail is perfect, often under tight deadlines. To release the stress, he used to leap onto a table and do a Pee-wee Herman dance. “I’m way too busy to do that nowadays,” he says.

Off work, Garrett is passionate about music. His taste is eclectic – everything from electronic to rock to alt-country; from Boards of Canada to the Beatles.

A veteran sailor, he’s crewed sailboats since age 6. And while we’re talking about his passions, we can’t forget hockey. He’s such an avid Pittsburgh Penguins fan that his wife, Mindy, defines the three faces of Garrett: Regular-Season Garrett, Playoff Garrett and Off-Season Garrett.

He likes the aggressiveness of hockey. It matches his own aggressive approach to life and work. Not to worry. Like most fierce competitors, Garrett confines his aggression to the field of play. Unless you count his penchant for zinging Peppermint Patties at unsuspecting colleagues.

When he’s not flinging candy or indulging his aggressions on the latest client challenge, Garrett is at home with Mindy, their dog, Luka, and cat, Izzy.
