Craig Tomson
The interplay of light and shadow. The texture of iron and wood. As a master of three-dimensional design, those are the things that fascinate Craig. Growing up helping his grandfather, a blacksmith and woodworker, he learned to appreciate the lasting quality of the materials. Felt the desire to create beautiful things, interesting things. Useful things.

“I love the building aspect of three-dimensional design. I love that it lasts, that it takes on additional character as it ages.”

Craig’s parents and grandparents also instilled in him the fierce independence and strong work ethic of a family that had survived the Depression farming in Kansas.

They encouraged his desire to draw, giving him the opportunity to take painting instruction when he was in high school. “I hated painting, though,” he says. “It was too unstructured.” He much preferred printmaking and the mechanics of woodcuts that he learned while earning his degree in fine arts.

His influence can be seen in a wide range of our work. He takes the lead on all manner of projects, from award-winning annual reports and sales-generating three-dimensional direct mail to complete branding campaigns with interactive, advertising, collateral and environmental components. He’s also an expert in Photoshop, his skill evident in the beautifully rendered photography that is one of our hallmarks.

Highlights of Craig’s creativity include branding/environmental graphics for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 1.5 million-square-foot, 64,500-seat Heinz Field Stadium; a national traveling exhibit of Frank Lloyd Wright light screens; and a Kansas Turnpike Authority-commissioned memorial honoring the life of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne.

Craig, who finds an innovative, results-oriented solution for every design challenge, says he’s in the perfect place to nurture his creativity. “It’s important to find people who respect you for what you do and can harness that desire and that passion. We strive for the very best. That fits me and ties back to who I am.”

When not working, Tomson and his wife enjoy travels to New Mexico. Its stark landscapes and broad vistas perfectly suit his love of black-and-white photography. This fine-art outlet advances Tomson’s exploration of light and depth, positive and negative balance.

Home restoration provides yet another means of expression. The couple’s arts-and-craft bungalow in Wichita’s historic Riverside area – also home to their young son – personifies the principles by which Tomson lives. The completion of each new project makes it even more of a showcase for the unity of form and function.
