Chaney Kimball
How could someone so laid back be such a monster of web design and animation? That’s a question Chaney Kimball often gets. But he just shrugs. That’s how laid back he is. In fact, at first glance, you might think Chaney was a surfer refugee from the beaches of San Diego. Or maybe a marathon runner. Perhaps a roadie for the Grateful Dead. But within that lanky, laid-back frame beats the heart of a raging interactive demon. Even if it beats only 42 times a minute. (A joke. We have never taken his pulse, officially.)

Chaney was one of the area’s earliest and still most formidable experts in Flash animation. Like Todd Gimlin, his fellow web guru at Greteman Group, he’s always been way ahead of the interactive curve.

After receiving a B.F.A in graphic design at Wichita State University, Chaney worked at one of the first web design and development studios in the region. He went on to several other firms, all the while building an impressive track record of innovative interactive solutions and honing his already sharp skills in Flash, Dreamweaver, Fireworks and other applications.

In 2001, he and Chris Parks (one of our senior art directors) co-founded UpDesign Bureau, where Chaney could fully unleash his unique and dynamic approach to web design and motion graphics, doing work for clients that included Big Dog Motorcycles, Vespa Scooters and Coleman.

“I see web design as basically an exercise in problem solving,” Chaney explains. “What are the goals? How do we achieve those goals through interactivity? Web design, like any design, is all about thinking through the problem and understanding the needs of your customer.”

That might be creating a dynamic, professional-looking website for the Kansas Aviation Museum that can be easily updated by volunteers or an interactive ad that helps recruit instructors for a new FlightSafety Learning Center in London.

But what about Chaney’s needs? He admits they are simple. Give him a piano, a guitar and an X-Box and he’s set for the weekend. Which probably makes him the coolest dad ever. Just ask his two young daughters.
