For the past year USAIG President Dave McKay led the historic club, building upon the excellence for which the club is known. On March 28, FlightSafety International President Bruce Whitman assumed the role. The world’s largest private clubhouse – the Yale Club in midtown Manhattan – hosted the annual banquet of this prestigious group. Aviation leaders from the States and abroad attended. An Accomplished Reign To Mr. McKay, we extend our congratulations for a job well done. Throughout the year, the club’s aviation-leaders-series luncheons were sold out more often than not. Speakers included CEOs from airlines, leading airframe manufacturers and international corporations. They provided much needed insight on everything from airline consolidation to carbon-emission trading initiatives. General Duncan McNabb of the U.S. Transportation Command served as the annual “Sight” lecturer, again to an enthusiastic, sold-old crowd. International outreach offered special luncheons at varied locales, from Dublin to Geneva. Last October’s gala at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel drew 1,200 attendees and its silent auction rang in at $187,000. Donations to ORBIS International and student scholarships continue the club’s deep-rooted commitment to helping others. A Banner 70th-Anniversary Year To Mr. Whitman, we say best wishes for the accomplishments we know lie ahead. His objectives – focused on enhancing member value – include everything from expanding a reciprocal program with other clubs to member discounts with area restaurants. The Aviation Leaders Series is moving to a new question-and-answer format with journalists interviewing industry leaders. Members will no doubt welcome this dynamic give and take. The upcoming luncheon in New York on April 19 features Embraer CEO Frederico Curado. Other sure-to-be-outstanding speakers in coming months include FedEx CEO Fred Smith, Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe and Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Jim Albaugh.
The Wings Club has been in good hands. It remains in an equally strong, capable grasp. Here from our perch in Wichita, the Air Capital, we will watch with no small measure of pride as this 70th-anniversary year unfolds.
