But Social Media Doesn’t Make Sense for Us
Some companies still think they don’t need to invest time, energy or resources in social media. ‘Why bother?’ they think. ‘We have a website. We run ads with the website on them. There’s only so much a company can do, right?’ Wrong. Very wrong.
We don’t want to sound like Chicken Little here, but companies that ignore social media may find themselves running for cover. There’s been a fundamental shift in the way people interact with brands, information and one another due in large part to social media tools.
Beyond Advertising
No matter how clever your ads are, a lot of people tune them out these days. That’s bad news for companies that rely exclusively on traditional media. If people don’t see your URL, they’re not directed to your website. That makes your company about as relevant as a pager.
“Hogwash,” you say. “People love the products and services we offer.” We don’t doubt that’s true (we said we liked you, remember?). But do they know that? There’s a vast sea of choices out there – how does the average consumer wade through everything to find you?
It’s not as simple as thumbing through a phonebook – probably because people don’t use phonebooks anymore (we just dumped our Yellow Page listing a couple of weeks ago). They use the Internet. “Ah-ha!” you say. “Our website is search-engine optimized.” Yeah. Well, so is my mom’s. In fact, the Internet is full of SEO websites. The simple truth is you just need more.
Go Ahead: Evolve
Smart marketing strategies constantly evolve. Today, having a website and advertising isn’t enough. First of all, it doesn’t give you the return on investment it once did. Second, the amount of information that can be found on the Internet is unfathomable. Google indexes more than 4.2 billion web pages. While the Internet becomes as cluttered as Fibber McGee’s closet, finding your site becomes more of a crapshoot. You have to encourage a rapport with your target market so they know exactly where to find you. So they go looking specifically for you. And, as of now, the most effective way to do that is with social media.
Will all these new tools that you’ll hear about survive? Maybe not. Will there be a whole bunch of new sites and networks that you’ll have to keep up with? Probably. But those aren’t reasons to stay away. Even if the tools change, the way people expect to engage with your brand won’t.
That means it’s time to jump in whether you like it or not. But don’t worry – were here to show you the ropes.
